What does the UK Passport Office require?

HM Passport Office asks for an “official translation” when your documents are in a foreign language. In the UK context this means that translations must be signed and stamped by a translator who is a member of a professional association.

In practice the translation must be accompanied by a certificate from the qualified translator, confirming his or her expertise and stating that the translation is a true and faithful rendering of the original document.

How are official translations made in Belgium?

In Belgium, official translations are made by Sworn Translators. These are professionals registered with the Belgian Ministry of Justice (FOD/SPF) and listed in the National Register of Translators. Only these sworn translators can provide official translations that are valid within Belgium. Futhermore, only translations made by sworn translators registered in Belgium can obtain an apostille from the Belgian Foreign Office.

Do you need an apostille for the UK Passport Office?

Here’s where things differ: the requirements in Belgium are not the same as those in the UK. HM Passport Office does not require your translation to have an apostille. Instead, it prefers your translation to be accompanied by a statement signed by the translator and attesting to his or  her  credentials and the accuracy of the translation. Finally and contrary to Belgian requirements they usually want to have the original copy of the translation  and not the electronic version.
